All three lamprey species occurring in western Europe are found in the Loch Lomond area: Sea Lamprey Petromyzon marinus L., River Lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis (L.) and Brook Lamprey Lampetra planeri (Bloch). There are major differences in ecology among the three species and in each some features seem to be unique to the Lomond populations. Available data on the ecology of the three species in the area are presented and existing threats reviewed. Future research and conservation requirements are outlined.
