LARGE-ANGLE ION SCATTERING FROM A SINGLE CRYSTAL

摘要
The scattering of argon ions from atoms in the first and the second atomic plane of a (100) gold surface is investigated for outgoing directions forming small angles (≤ 20°) to the surface. The scattering involves one violent collision and weak collisions with the neighbouring atoms. The double collision phenomena expected from a theoretical analysis are observed. The data interpretation yields information on the structure of the surface cleaned by sputtering, on thermal vibrations of atoms in the first atomic plane, and on charge state distributions for specified scattering centers and ion trajectories. © 1969.
