A line-reversal technique has been used to measure the temperature profiles of premixed nitrous oxide-acetylene flames of differing stoichiometries. The temperature of the region of the fuel-rich flame where emission and absorption measurements are usually made is found to be about 2880°K. The widely-quoted figure of 3228°K for the maximum temperature of the nitrous oxide-acetylene flame occurs, if at all, only in the primary reaction zone, where lack of thermal equilibrium makes the results of temperature measurements uncertain. © 1968.
