THE RAYLEIGH-TAYLOR INSTABILITY IN DUSTY PLASMAS

The Rayleigh-Taylor instability in dusty plasmas is analyzed. The presence of negatively charged dust substantially reduces the range of unstable wave-numbers, while the opposite is true for positively charged dust. The charge on the dust grains is assumed to remain constant throughout wave growth. It is shown, on the basis of recent work by Havnes et al. (Phys. Scr. 45, 491, 1992) and Melandso et al. (J. geophys. Res., in press, 1993), that this assumption is valid only for wave frequencies much smaller (or much larger) than the charging frequency of the dust grains.
