Further improvement in the outcome of the patient with SAP can be expected in the future by the timely application of a series of therapeutic means during the course of the disease. Therefore a better understanding of the pathogenesis of the initial event, knowledge of the natural history of SAP and its complications, accurate and early recognition of the specific phases of the disease are crucial to define both indication and timing of these different therapeutic interventions. © 1990 Springer-Verlag.
