摘要
We have measured the STM light emission (STM-LE) spectra of a Au film evaporated on a prism-coupler surface. The STM was placed in an ultrahigh-vacuum chamber and the spectra were measured both on the tip side and through the prism. The prism-side emission has a single narrow peak whose position moves with the emission angle. This emission is definitely due to surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) at the Au/vacuum interface. The tip-side emission spectrum contains three peaks between 1.5 and 1.9 eV. Their origin cannot be determined experimentally, although they are believed to arise from localized surface plasmons (LSP). The STM-LE spectra are extremely sensitive to the surface conditions of the tip and the sample.
