The atmospheric chemistry of the alkoxy radical CF3O produced in the photooxidation of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) 134a has been investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. CF3O radicals are shown to react with methane and CF3CFH2 to give CF3OH. CF3OH decomposes to give COF2 and HF. The rate constant for the reaction CF3O + CF3CFH2 (HFC-134a) - CF3OH + CF3CFH was determined to be k19 = (1.1 +/- 0.7) X 10(-15) cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at 297 K. The implications of our results for the atmospheric chemistry of CF3O radicals and HFC-134a are discussed.
