EVIDENCE OF A FOURTH COMPONENT IN BRILLOUIN SPECTRUM OF LIQUID GLYCERINE

摘要
An intense background of isotropic scattering has been observed in the Brillouin spectrum of glycerine. Its breadth varies inversely as the viscosity or structural relaxation time, which changes by a factor of about 50 in the temperature range studied, 23 to 91°C. Thus the background is attributed to a known structural relaxation process in glycerine. These results suggest that the appearance of a broad background of isotropic scattering from liquids is a general phenomenon occuring whenever a structural or a thermal relaxation is present. © 1968 The American Physical Society.
