Diamagnetic measurements are presented for two series of Schiff's bases: p-pentoxybenzilidene alkylaniline ( ″50 m″ ) and p-alcoxybenzilidene butylaniline ( ″n04″ ). An even odd effect is revealed at the isotropic-nematic as well as at the nematic-smectic A transitions. the results are interpreted in terms of molecular theories in the case of nematic-smectic A and smectic A-smectic C transitions. Some assumptions are made on the structure of smectic phases from the magnetic behavior. At last a comparison is established between the magnetic evolution and the transitional enthalpies for the various smectic phase changes.
