摘要
Outlines the classical population biology and genetics of the causative agent of potato late blight; the fungus is now found wherever potatoes are grown. Epidemics are caused by asexual sporangia which can be dispersed for tens of kilometers. The fungus survives between seasons as vegetative mycelium in infected host tissue, or in C Mexico probably as oospores (products of sexual recombination) in soil. Major sections of this review consider: genetics/ markers, structure of geographically-separated populations, and evolutionary mechanisms. Conclusions are drawn regarding within-field diversity; regional/continental diversity; temporal diversity; population structure (using the concept of a metapopulation); sexual reproduction; and mechanisms leading to evolutionary divergence. -P.J.Jarvis
