Tests of dry wear on an Amsler tribometer have been proved on an AISI 9840 steel previously submitted to a quenching and tempering treatment at two different temperatures, as to obtain a material with the same structure but different hardness. The aim of this work is the study of the influence of some factors which characterize material surface state, and more precisely, the hardness, the roughness and the surface degreasing. Wear dependence on these factors has been analyzed; besides, an attempt to set the optimal conditions for standardized tests, has been made. The results show how the change of these factors can greatly influence material wear behaviour.
