In the specific TiAl alloy examined in this study, fatigue crack propagation in the fully lamellar microstructure proceeds by three distinct fracture processes: a translamellar mode nominally perpendicular to the lamellar interfaces, an interlamellar mode where crack advance occurs along γ γT or α2 γ interfaces, and an intralamellar mode where crack advance proceeds along slip planes confined to a single γ lamellae and bounded by γ GT or α2 γ interfaces. The nature of these fracture modes suggest that crack tip deformation is an important part of the fatigue crack growth process. Further studies are underway to delineate the specific deformation processes involved in these crack advance modes and to determine their dependence on temperature and environment. © 1995.
