Caterpillar feeding was studied in six commercially available white cabbage cultivars differing in 2-propenyl glucosinolate (sinigrin) content. Four field experiments were performed during 2 years. In the first year an almost pure Plutella xylostella attack occurred, while in the second year there was a mixed attack by Plutella and Pieris spp. In all experiments, significant differences in larval attack between the cultivars were obtained. A significant negative correlation between larval feeding and sinigrin level was found. This raises the question whether breeding for low-sinigrin cabbage increases insect attacks.
