Type I diabetes occurs as a result of T-cell-mediated beta-cell destruction. Several candidate antigens have been described recently, including glutamic acid decarboxylase, heat shock protein 65 and perpherin. Restricted T-cell receptor V-beta gene usage in non-obese diabetic mice has been suggested but not yet proven. In addition to major histocompatibility genes, several non-H-2 predisposing genes have been mapped on chromosomes 1, 3 and 11.
