ENHANCEMENT OF THE CRITICAL CURRENT OF AG8TL2BA2CA2CU3O10 BY COMPRESSIVE REORIENTATION

Superconducting samples of bulk composition Ag8Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 with zero-resistance T(c) of 118-122 K were prepared by a three-step procedure. The sample was cut into thin rectangular slices and subsequently forced to reorient its grains by compression in the z direction while allowing the sample to expand freely in the x and y directions. Compressive deformation of the sample under 44 kbar pressure was found to raise its transport critical current density at 77 K from 1.1 x 10(2) to 1.3 x 10(3) A/cm2. The compressive deformation raised the magnetic critical current density at H = 0.1 T from 4.5 x 10(2) to 3.4 x 10(3) A/cm2 at 77 K and from 2.0 x 10(4) to 1.6 x 10(5) A/cm2 at 5 K. DC susceptibility measurements also showed enhancement of magnetic anisotropy of the deformed sample.
