EQUILIBRIUM AND QUASI-EQUILIBRIUM PROPERTIES OF SMALL PARTICLES

摘要
The aim of this review article is to give a systematic account of the present state of small-particle physics. Not only theoretical, but also experimental data are described. Mainly metal particles with size from several nm to several tens nm are treated; some results remain valid also for insulating particles. The properties of atomic clusters containing from tens to several hundreds of atoms are also discussed. The following topics are mainly dealt with. (1) New developments in the thermodynamics of small particles; (2) the present state of the quantum theory of conduction electrons in imperfect particles; (3) size dependence of Fermi energy and work function, and physical and chemical effects caused by it; (4) magnetic properties of small particles including ferromagnetic particles: (5) manifestation of macroscopic quantum tunneling in small particles.
