Ag-sheathed Bi-2223 mono- and multifilamentary superconducting tapes have been obtained from wires produced by the powder-in-tube method. The tapes have been characterized by scanning electron and polarized optical microscopy, together with critical current density (J(c) and J(c)(B)) measurements. A systematic study of the processing parameters (annealing time and temperature, compaction pressure and number of cycles) has led to an optimized procedure for the fabrication of high J(c) monofilamentary (2.1 X 10(4) A cm-2 at 77 K and zero field) tapes. Multifilamentary tapes have also been obtained with J(c) as high as 1.35 x 10(4) A cm-2 at 77 K and zero field.
