ON THE CONCEPT OF THE J/PSI FORMATION TIME IN QUARK-GLUON PLASMA

We analyze the rate with which the J/ψ content of an originally narrow wave packet of charmed quark-antiquark pair is diminishing in a medium which screens colour charges. The J/ψ content decreases to 50% within a typical time of 0.2-0.3 fm. Taking this into account, we find the pT-dependence of J/ψ suppression by quark-gluon plasma to be much flatter than in simplified calculations based on the semi-classical picture of J/ψ formation time. © 1990 Springer-Verlag.
