Cross-linked gels of poly(L-glutamic acid) (PGA) possessing cholesteric or nematic liquid-crystalline (LC) order were prepared from the corresponding LC gels of poly(gamma-benzyl L-glutamate). Optical anisotropy measured by transmitted light intensity through cholesteric LC hydrogels between crossed polarizers showed reversible changes with the alternation of pH values. Mechanical anisotropy was also found in the nematic LC hydrogels.
