Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been employed in the observations of chemical vapor deposited (CVD) homoepitaxial diamond (111) surfaces. The surfaces are composed of an H-terminated 1 x 1 structure. Single-atom height steps on the surfaces are observed to be very straight and form a downward slope in the [112BAR] direction. Some adsorbates different from the H-terminated monohydride structure have been found on each terrace. We speculate that these adsorbates are CH3.
