SOLUBILITY OF SILVER CHLORIDE AND BROMIDE AND FORMATION OF SILVER HALIDE COMPLEXES IN MOLTEN AMMONIUM NITRATE DIHYDRATE

The solubilities of silver chloride and bromide as a function of the corresponding ammonium halide concentration were determined in molten NH4NO3·2H2O, at 55, 70, and 85°. Solubility measurements were made using a radioactive-tracer technique with 110Ag. The solubility product Ksp and the consecutive stability constants of the complexes AgX, AgX2-, and AgX3- (X- = Cl-, Br-) were computed. The results are discussed in terms of a quasi-lattice model of molten salts.
