NOVEL CROSS-CORRELATION TECHNIQUE FOR CHARACTERIZATION OF SUBPICOSECOND PULSES FROM MODE-LOCKED SEMICONDUCTOR-LASERS

A diagnostic technique for repetitively pulsed lasers which is simple in application but provides subpicosecond temporal resolution is described. The method uses cross-correlation in a scanned Michelson interferometer, the electrical output of which is produced by a low-speed photodiode and a lock-in amplifier. A measurement on an actively mode-locked semiconductor laser emitting near a wavelength of 0.845 mum indicated a pulse width of 258 +/- 44 fs and a phase memory time for pulses in a train of 1.47 ns.
