FORMATION OF FAST AND SLOW DECAY MODES IN N-LEVEL SYSTEMS COUPLED TO ONE OPEN CHANNEL

摘要
The scattering matrix of a system with N bound states coupled to one continuum is investigated. In order to characterize the typical behaviour, statistical arguments are used. For sufficiently strong coupling between bound states and continuum, one state is formed the width of which is large compared to the sum of the widths of the other ones. From the topological structure of the S-matrix it follows that this broad mode does not show up as a resonance but leads to the formation of structures varying at a scale which is of the order of the length of the spectrum.
