SOLITON DYNAMICS IN A MONOMODE OPTICAL FIBER

摘要
A pedagogical survey of solitons in optical fibres is attempted. The basic nonlinear equation governing the pulse dynamics in one dimension taking into account the Kerr effect and second-order dispersion is derived. It is then used to discuss the physics of soliton formation in optical fibres. The effects on the soliton dynamics arising from the higher-order dispersion and fibre loss are analysed. Modulational instability and its consequences are discussed. Various schemes for the amplification of solitons are also presented. Applications of fibre-optic solitons to communication systems and the soliton laser are discussed. © 1990.
