FABRICATION OF STM TIPS WITH CONTROLLED GEOMETRY BY ELECTROCHEMICAL ETCHING AND ECSTM TIPS COATED WITH PARAFFIN

摘要
We have presented two simple methods of ''unfixed-position shield'' and ''pulling out'' for making sharp STM Pt-Ir tips with low aspect ratio by electrochemical etching in KCN/NaOH aqueous solution and ECSTM tips coated with paraffin. By limiting the electrolytic actions to a small region of the wire with an unfixed-position shield and decreasing the weight of the lower portion of the wire before the ''drop off' phenomenon occurred, STM Pt-Ir tips can be fabricated with a radius of curvature and aspect ratio as small as 0.1 and 1 mu m, respectively. ECSTM tips coated with paraffin can be made simply by a ''pulling-out'' method. The apparent electrochemical radius of aperture of ECSTM tip estimated by cyclic voltammetry is 0.4 mu m. In addition, the paraffin was allowed to be molten once more until good insulation was obtained by this method using the same STM tip.
