ENERGY-TRANSFER IN TERBIUM-ACTIVATED SILICATE-GLASSES

Measurements of luminescence efficiency under UV, neutron and charged-particle excitation as a function of temperature down to 4K are reported in a range of terbium-activated silicate glasses. The results support a model for phonon-assisted energy transfer over a limited temperature range (50-250K) via linear temperature response, with direct excitation at terbium sites below 50K. Radiation damage leads to a 12% increase in luminescence output from 25-4K in these glasses. Conclusions are drawn about the role of allowed- and forbidden-transition luminescent activators in silicate glass hosts.
