A source of polarized 3He+ ions has been constructed and tested. An optical pumping technique is used to polarize the nuclear spins of the ions, which are extracted in the manner of an rf ion source of conventional design. In a nuclear double scattering experiment, a polarization of 0.05 was observed in the ion beam with an intensity of 44 μA and an emittance of 1 cm · rad · eV 1 2. © 1969.
