NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF 90-DEGREES EXCHANGE-COUPLING IN MAGNETIC MULTILAYERS

Evidence for 90-degrees exchange coupling between Fe layers in epitaxial Fe/Cr/Fe sandwiches have recently been reported by various groups. Following Slonczewski's approach, we interpret this 90-degrees coupling as due to spatial fluctuations in the interlayer coupling through the Cr spacer layer caused by the presence of terraces at the Fe/Cr interfaces. We investigate numerically a model based on this assumption. The magnetization curves, coupling energy, effect of the average chromium thickness have been calculated. We demonstrate in particular that this 90-degrees coupling can be represented by a biquadratic variation only for small deviations around 90-degrees. We also show that all intermediate angles between the magnetic moments of the Fe layers from 0-degrees to 180-degrees can be obtained depending on the average thickness of Cr.
