COBEX (COllider Beauty EXperiment) is a dedicated open-geometry forward spectrometer experiment for a hadron collider (LHC, SSC, Tevatron or UNK), which is capable of providing large samples of many different reconstructed exclusive B-meson decays with good measurements of proper time, mass and initial flavor. We discuss the issues that lead to design decisions optimizing the ''CP-reach'' of the experiment and evaluate its expected performance using Monte Carlo techniques. Matching the fixed-target geometry of the forward detector requires a microvertex detector with RF-shielded silicon-strip planes, installed inside the machine vacuum pipe perpendicular to the beam line. A large microvertex detector of this type has been built and successfully tested at the SPS-Collider. The experiment can be run with a high-p(t) muon trigger for luminosities more than 10(32) CM-2 S-1, or with a more efficient Level-1 topology trigger (based on silicon information) with luminosities up to a few times 10(31).
