BLENDS OF POLY(STYRENE-STAT-ACRYLONITRILE) AND POLY(BUTADIENE-STAT-ACRYLONITRILE) - A GUIDE TO THE BUTADIENE-ACRYLONITRILE SEGMENTAL INTERACTION

A range of butadiene-acrylonitrile and of styrene-acrylonitrile statistical copolymers have been synthesized and blended to establish a value for the segmental interaction energy density between butadiene and acrylonitrile. Two series of blends were examined. In the first series, "internal" blends from butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers of different composition were found to be miscible only when the compositions differed by less than about 4 vol %. In contrast, blends of butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers with styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers formed a fairly extensive miscibility region which was analyzed by considering this to form part of a conic section in composition space. A value for the butadiene-acrylonitrile segmental interaction energy density B(B-AN) of 33-37 J cm-3 appropriately describes the phase behavior in this system.
