EFFECT OF STREPTOZOTOCIN ON CARNITINE AND CARNITINE ACYLTRANSFERASES IN RAT-HEART, LIVER, AND KIDNEY

摘要
Diabetes was induced in male rats by a single intravenous injection of streptozotocin. Fourteen days after injection, elevated plasma levels of glucose, β-hydroxybutyrate, and acetoacetate were observed. Specific activities of carnitine acetyl-, octanyl-, isobutyryl-, isovaleryl-, and palmityltransferase were elevated in the 500g supernatants of liver of the streptozotocin-treated animals. In 500g supernatants of kidney, all except the isovaleryltransferase were elevated; in heart, no changes in enzyme levels were observed. Free carnitine, short-chain acylcarnitine, and long-chain acylcarnitine levels were elevated in liver; whereas free carnitine was depressed in heart, and short-chain and long-chain acylcarnitine were elevated in kidney. © 1979.
