INSITU OBSERVATIONS OF CRYSTAL-GROWTH OF BI-BASED OXIDE SUPERCONDUCTORS

In situ observations of crystal growth and decomposition of Bi-based oxide superconductors (BSCCO) were carried out by high-temperature optical microscopy. The growth processes of BSCCO from high-temperature solutions of various compositions were studied by slowly cooling a liquid drop on an MgO substrate. The formation of the high-T(c) phase by a peritectic reaction between a solid and a liquid was observed. The high-T(c) phase was also formed by the decomposition of the low-T(c) phase. These in situ observations led to a proposal of a modified pseudo-binary phase diagram where the high-T(c) phase coexists with a liquid.
