EFFECT OF GAMMA-RADIATION DOSE-RATE ON THE LIGHT OUTPUT OF COMMERCIAL POLYMER SCINTILLATORS

This paper describes research to determine the effect of radiation dose rate on the light output of three commercial scintillators: SCSN-38, SCSN-81 and Bicron-499-35. Scintillator disks were 1 in. in diameter and 4 mm thick. The disks were irradiated in air with a Co-60 gamma source to a total dose of 10 Mrad at varying dose rates of 1.5, 0.35, 0.14, 0.04, 0.013, 0.0069, 0.0045 and 0.0023 Mrad/h. Lower dose rates result in increased light output damage, but the dependence is different for each scintillator. Light output showed a semilogarithmic dependence on the dose rate. These results indicate that dose rate response is an important parameter which must be considered to adequately evaluate the radiation stability of scintillators.
