FABRICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF ALKOXY-DERIVED NANOPHASE TIO2 COATINGS

Alkoxy-derived coatings of titanium oxide, up to 40 mu m thick were prepared on Ti6Al4V surgical alloy substrates in methanolic electrolytes at room temperature by an electrochemical method. The chemical composition and structure of these coatings were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), glancing angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As-prepared oxide coatings were dense, adherent and essentially non-stoichiometric. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the oxide coatings may consist of ultrafine crystallites. These coatings exhibited considerable plastic deformation at room temperature.
