Thin-windowed germanium detectors have been prepared by ion implantation with gallium followed by a conventional lithium ion-drift. Such a detector has shown an overall energy resolution of 37 keV (fwhm) for 34 MeV protons. Of this total linewidth, the contribution due to the detection system alone is estimated to be 22 keV. A description is given of a cryostat assembly which allows dE dx and E particle discrimination by means of a silicon and germanium detector telescope. Other applications of thin-windowed germanium detectors are also considered. © 1969.
