RECONSTRUCTION OF THE SI(111) SURFACE-INDUCED BY ALKALI-METALS

Both (1 x 3) and (square-root 3 x square-root 3)R30-degrees reconstructions of the Si(111) surface induced by Li, K and Cs depositions have been studied by low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). It has been found that measured LEED I-V curves for (1 x 3) reconstruction induced by different alkali metals are virtually identical to each other, which suggests that the (1 x 3) structures of the Si(111) reconstruction induced by different alkali metals are nearly identical. Work-function measurements indicating alkali-metal coverages of near 0.1 ML for the (1 x 3) structures, excluded the possibility of long-range ordered structures of Li in the (1 x 3) reconstruction. The measured I-V curves of the Li-induced (square-root 3 x square-root 3)R30-degrees reconstruction are similar to those of Ag-induced (square-root 3 x square-root 3)R30-degrees structures, indicating similarity between the (square-root 3 X square-root 3) structures.
