BEYOND A UNIDIMENSIONAL SCALE OF MERIT

A case is made for looking beyond one-dimensional scale of merit for the purpose of assessment of cognitive functions. It is suggested that a comprehensive assessment scheme should include at least three objectives: to provide norms; to construct tests to be used as tools for investigating cognitive functions; and to suggest a prescription for the amelioration of defective functions wherever possible. An example of such an alternative to unidimensional measure is discussed at length. Theories and tests of intelligent behavior should not continue with their concern for general ability. A paradigm shift has occurred. Intellectual behavior is being understood in terms of concepts familiar to cognitive psychology and neuropsychology, and the emphasis is on the analyses of the many dimensions of intelligent behavior as they are shaped and expressed within a social-cultural context.
