By using an analytical expression for the static-structure factor of the interacting electron gas we present a simple method to calculate the correlation energy epsilon(cor). For two and three dimensions we obtain in the high-density limit analytical results which are in good agreement with results from the literature. The corrections due to a finite local-field correction are calculated analytically. We find that with increasing valley degeneracy g(v) the correlation energy increases. For quasi-one-dimensional systems with wire radius R(0) we predict epsilon(cor) alpha - g(v)(3)r(s)(2)/R(0)(2) + O(r(s)(3)) and r(s) is the parameter of the random-phase-approximation.
