Low temperature sintering and piezoelectric properties of CuO-doped (K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 ceramics

(Na0.5K0.5)NbO3 ceramics require sintering below 1,000 degrees C to avoid the problem of Na-volatilization which results in lower resistivity. In this study we report the effect of CuO on the sintering behavior of (Na0.5K0.5)NbO3 ceramics. It was found that (Na0.5K0.5)NbO3 + 1.5 mol% CuO ceramics sintered at 950 degrees C for 2 hr exhibit excellent piezoelectric properties of d(33) = 100 pC/N, k(p) = 0.36, and Q(m) = 1200. The remanent polarization and coercive field of this composition were of the order of 21.94 mu C/cm(2) and 1.2 kV/mm. These results are very promising for the hard lead free piezoelectric ceramics.
