In their recent Science publication, Doupe et al. (2012) demonstrate that a single population of proliferating progenitor cells is solely responsible for homeostatic self-renewal and repair of injured esophageal epithelium. These findings argue against an obligate requirement for long-lived (reserve) stem cells in adult epithelia.
