摘要
Biological recycling of biodegradable polymers is an important option for reducing municipal solid waste. Legislation, including prohibitions on disposal of nonbiodegradable waste at sea, is making development of biodegradable products more urgent. Biodegradable polymers based on cellulose, starch, protein, microbial polyesters and polylactic acid each have properties which suggest possible applications. Mechanical properties of synthetic polymers are generally easier to match with biodegradable polymers than are moisture and oxygen barrier properties. However, strategies exist for utilizing or enhancing barrier properties.
