We report for the first time the use of a spatially dispersive laser cavity as a regenerative amplifier of ultrashort pulses. By spatially dispersing the beam on a Ti:sapphire crystal and amplifying independently the wavelengths, we were able to overcome gain narrowing. An energy of 1.6 nl was obtained with a spectrum of 81 nm at full width at half-maximum (FWHM). We discuss the different advantages of this technique and also theoretically investigate the possibility for intracavity dispersion compensation. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
