A new procedure for the C1-C2 fragmentation of cyclic carbohydrates, through the formation of anomeric alkoxy radicals from the corresponding nitrate esters, with (Bu3SnH)-Bu-n/azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN), affords acyclic alditols in good yields.
