An efficient and direct procedure for the synthesis of novel 12-aryl- or 12-alkyl-8,9,10,12-tetrahydrobenzo[a]xantben-11-one derivatives has been described. The process employs a three-component condensation reaction in one-pot using 2-naphthol, aldehydes and cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds in the presence of a catalytic amount of NaHSO4 center dot SiO2 in 1,2-dichloroethane under reflux.
