Peptide nucleic acid (PNA): A lead for gene therapeutic drugs

摘要
PNA (peptide nucleic acid) is a DNA mimic with a pseudopeptide backbone consisting of aminoethyl glycine units, to which the nucleobases are attached via methylene carbonyl linkers. Excellent RNA and DNA hybridization properties and biological stability, combined with convenient solid phase peptide synthesis, have made PNA a highly interesting lead for gene pharmaceutical drugs. The chemical and biochemical/biological properties in relation to the drug potential of PNA are reviewed.
