The constellation of motor and vocal ties and certain of the other neuropsychiatric symptoms seen in Tourette syndrome are thought to have an organic basis, although the nature of the neurobiological lesion is uncertain. The syndrome is usually familiar but the presumed genetic substrate has not been identified. A number of models currently under debate include a proposed autoimmune contribution.
