A compact, low-energy AMS system designed for detection of C-14 and H-3 in bioanalytical chemistry applications has been completed and has undergone initial performance evaluation. The instrument is equipped with a gas-fed ion source that accepts a flow of carrier gas from any of several interfaces that convert sample carbon and hydrogen in real time to CO2 and H-2, respectively, for transport to the ion source. This configuration creates a unique AMS instrument that can serve as detector for gas and liquid chromatographs as well as other sample introduction modalities not previously available for AMS. In this paper we describe performance of some of the essential aspects of the AMS instrument itself. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
