Omni-directional characteristics of composite retroreflectors

摘要
An omni-directional retroreflecting structure is introduced and analyzed in this work. The device is a composite assembly of individual retroreflectors, whose orientations are aligned in such a way that the individual phi- and theta-dependent angular retroreflective responses overlap over 90 degrees. intervals. It is shown that this overlapped structural response allows for retroreflection over the full 4 pi steradians solid angle. The dynamic response of the omni-directional device is then tested in a simplified passive uplink communication configuration with liquid crystal (LC) optical modulators covering the composite entrance interfaces. The modulation characteristics of the LC shutters are effectively mapped onto the retroreflected beam.
