Crystal field splitting of lanthanide 4fn-15d-levels in inorganic compounds

摘要
Crystal field splitting of the 4f(n-1) 5d-levels of Ce3+ and Eu2+ in inorganic compounds is reviewed. A clear correlation between the splitting and the type of anion coordination polyhedron (octahedral, cubal, dodecahedral, tricapped trigonal prism, and cuboctahedral) around the lanthanide ion will be demonstrated. Irrespective of the type of polyhedron, data reveal an R-2 dependence of the magnitude of the splitting on the average distance R to the ligands. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
