PbSnCaTe films and PbSnCaTe/PbSnTe superlattices prepared by molecular beam epitaxy

Pb(1-x)(1-y)Snx(1-y)CayTe (x = 0.2) films and Pb(1-x)(1-y)Snx(1-y)CayTe/Pb1-xSnxTe superlattices were prepared by molecular beam epitaxy, and the properties of the films and superlattices were characterized by X-ray diffraction, optical transmission, and hole measurements. Pb(1-x)(1-y)Snx(1-y)CayTe films well lattice-matched to the Pb1-xSnxTe film were obtained by growing the films from PbSnTe, Ca, and Te source materials. Optical transmission spectra of the Pb(1-x)(1-y)Snx(1-y)CayTe/Pb1-xSnxTe superlattices showed clear steps in the interband absorption spectra, indicating a type-I heterostructure where both electrons and holes are confined in the Pb1-xSnxTe quantum wells.
